The Item System
Item systems are a very important part of any RPG game, and Slumbox is no different. Slumbox has a complex item system with over a dozen item categories. Most of our item categories themselves have complex item generation mechanics.
My personal favourite are misc items, these are the random uncategorised junk items you can find when exploring the gameworld. Be that digging through a pile of junk, getting a gift from a friend, or exploring the backshelves of a crusty shop in a forgotten district.
As of writing this (surely going to change in the future) there are 510 different misc items. Some of these are complete junk, broken wires, bent metal scraps, bone paperweights. But 100s of them have their own weird uses.
Whenever you drink a can or bottle of drink, or eat a tinned snack, You get to keep the empty vessel. These can be thrown away or recycled at a recycling machine.
One of 50+ random sketches you can find… and believe me some of them are very weird.
Here’s a Bone D12 I spawned with during testing. This can be rolled for a random number. You can find over 100 different types of dice and even find ‘Dice Bags’ in the wild which contain within them all kinds of dice.
We also have screaming bigfoot toys, sneezing boxes, laughing buttons, playable flutes, chimes, kazoos, mouthharps, and more.
You can find credchips with money on them, and others with crust covering them that you need to pick off before you can use them. Flippable coins with everything from ‘YES’ and ‘NO’ and ‘FUCK YOU’ or ‘FUCK ME’ to the coin of fortune which if heads, gives you a random amount of money.
This just scratches the surface of what you can find in the heap of the 510 misc items and there millions of proc gen variants. So leave no stone unturned and no box unlooted… because you never know… You may find a Quantumlined Encrusted Jewelled Brick to help you put a downpayment on that house you always wanted.
There are tons of Loot boxes in Slumbox that can be found and purchased. Comicpacks (find sealed comics inside), CD boxes, Bootleg Boxes (find sealed bootleg cds), Mystery Boxes (random items), Junk Boxes (always items worth 0), Dice Bags (random dice), Snackpacks (random snack items), Artboxes (random sketches), Boozeboxes (random booze), and finally as pictured 6-packs.
6-Packs are a bit less conventional as loot boxes, but when opened you get a 6 identical random items of that type. So opening a 6-Pack of Beer could give you 6 half-drunk spiced beers, or 6 Ice Cold Legendary Beers. These would have varying drunkness, junk level, and value.
There is also the Box Box, a personal favourite. The box box contains within it, 3 loot boxes of some capacity. Box Boxes can include Box Boxes too, but unlikely.
And finally you may also discover a Quantum Mystery Box, consider this Schrodinger's Loot Box… It may contain items… It may contain nothing at all.
Here are some of those drinks from the 6-Packs as an example of the proc gen effects layered over them.
Some of them are branded, like CheapCo (cheaper and low quality), ToothlessJoe (sugary and thus more junk), Junkmaster (full of junk)
Junk Level is a stat the player has which goes up the more junk you eat which makes the player shake violently the higher it goes. It does drop over time though so don’t worry!
